CreativeLive Masterclasses
INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA

I designed and taught two intermediate-level CreativeLive courses that guided digital design enthusiasts through tactile mixed-media and fantasy-based compositing techniques.

Mixed Media for Digital Creatives focused on digitizing tactile materials and blending physical elements with digital effects.

Compositing for Digital Creatives explored digital fantasy scene creation through photo compositing, visual storytelling, and design principles.

Both courses integrated instructional media production, creative technology training, and visual communication, empowering learners to merge creativity and digital skill with confidence.

Recorded Segment

Lesson 4: What is Blending of the live class "Compositing for Digital Creatives." Previously recorded at CreativeLive Studios in San Francisco, CA.

Design Notes & Rationale

  • Each class was developed as an instructional media experience combining live video demonstration, on-screen modeling, and a detailed digital workbook.

    • In Mixed Media for Digital Creatives, learners practiced scanning, photographing, and refining physical art objects for reuse in digital compositions.

    • In Compositing for Digital Scrapbookers, they learned to develop visual themes, source complementary imagery, and apply Photoshop compositing techniques such as blend modes, adjustment layers, and extractions.

The curriculum was built to help digital artists incorporate tactile methods into their digital workflows, integrating hardware familiarity (camera, scanner) with creative software mastery (Photoshop).

  • Both courses followed Gagné’s Nine Events of Instruction to guide learners through motivation, modeling, and practice, reinforced by Cognitive Apprenticeship principles to build technical fluency through authentic creative tasks.

I designed the digital workbooks to support independent practice — each providing step-by-step tutorials, visual aids, and layered project files for hands-on learning. The design aesthetic mirrored the content: clean layouts balanced with vibrant, artistic imagery to model digital craftsmanship and inspire creative experimentation.

Outcomes

Both classes received strong learner engagement and outstanding feedback on CreativeLive.

  • Mixed Media for Digital Scrapbookers earned a 100% student recommendation rate with over 9,000 learners worldwide, praised for its clarity, creativity, and hands-on guidance.

  • Compositing for Digital Scrapbookers achieved an 86% student recommendation rate with over 7,900 learners, recognized for making advanced digital compositing techniques approachable and inspiring.

Together, the courses demonstrate the power of instructional media and experiential learning to translate complex digital art processes into accessible, confidence-building learning experiences..
